Vascular Laser
What Are Spider Veins?
Spider veins refer to small, dilated blood vessels visible under the skin. They appear in a range of colors, from small blue venules to fine pink, red, or violet capillaries.
Spider veins are often the earliest sign of chronic venous insufficiency. They can sometimes be connected to deeper varicose veins, which is why a venous duplex ultrasound is a crucial first step in diagnosing underlying issues. This imaging helps determine whether laser treatment is suitable and, in some cases, whether additional therapies, such as sclerotherapy, may be needed for optimal results.
Since spider veins often indicate a general fragility of the venous system, regular phlebology check-ups are recommended to monitor and manage their progression.
Which Laser Is Used for Treatment?
Two types of lasers are commonly used to treat spider veins:
- KTP Laser (532 nm)
- Nd:YAG Laser (1064 nm)
Dr. Chady Kallassy uses the state-of-the-art “Excel V” laser by Cutera, which converts laser energy into heat, targeting the vessels for destruction while preserving the surrounding skin.
This destruction occurs through two mechanisms:
- Selective Photocoagulation: The laser “closes” the target vessels, effectively sealing them.
- Selective Photothermolysis: The laser causes the vessels to break apart.
How Many Sessions Are Needed?
The number of sessions required depends on the size, age, and extent of the spider veins. It’s difficult to predict the exact number of sessions needed to achieve the desired aesthetic results, as this varies from person to person. Patients should aim for gradual and reasonable improvements as the treatment progresses. It’s important to note that achieving a completely flawless result is not always guaranteed.
What Happens During a Session?
Before the session, it is recommended to avoid tanned skin. However, modern Nd:YAG lasers can safely treat darker skin tones and are effective on most types of spider veins.
- Procedure Duration: A session typically lasts around 30 minutes and does not require local anesthesia.
- Sensations: The laser pulses feel like small elastic snaps or tingling with a slight warmth. Treating red spider veins is usually painless, while blue or violet veins, which are larger, may cause mild discomfort. This sensation is temporary and brief.
What to Expect After the Session?
- Immediate Aftermath: Treated areas may show slight redness or raised spots resembling nettle stings or minor scratches. These are normal, inflammatory responses that fade within hours.
- Healing Phase: Within 8–10 days, treated vessels darken, sometimes turning brownish or blackish, with possible small scabs. This phase is painless, and a healing cream will be prescribed to use for 8–10 days.
- Long-Term Results: Results take time to appear. Larger, older spider veins (blue or purple) may require more sessions and take longer to heal compared to newer, finer red or pink veins. Initial results after the first or second session may seem underwhelming, but patience is essential.
- Complete Healing: Full healing typically takes 4–5 weeks. Sessions are spaced at least two months apart to allow adequate recovery. Sun exposure is strictly avoided for at least a month following treatment to prevent hyperpigmentation. If exposure is necessary, apply a high SPF 50 sunscreen to protect treated areas.
